Congratulations to the big winner of the morning, Nominees to be Determined.
Paperwork matters, folks.
Supporting Actor came in pretty much in line with expectations — yesterday I said if it ends up being “the four SAG nominees that have contended elsewhere, and someone else” then I wouldn’t be too shocked and behold, I’m not shocked.
Meanwhile, Jamie Lee Curtis (The Last Showgirl) and Danielle Deadwyler (The Piano Lesson) might be considered the “snubs” of Supporting Actress.
The Directors branch did indeed break with the DGA, exactly as I brilliantly forecasted, but did so by swapping out an Austrian-Swiss director for a French director, which well alright man you can’t call ’em all.
Best Actress came in largely in-line with expectations, though I’m Still Here seems to have a little more juice among Oscar voters than expected and Fernanda Torres got a nomination over two BAFTA nominees and a SAG nominee (Pamela Anderson, The Last Showgirl).
Daniel Craig (Queer) doesn’t get a bite at the apple for playing out on a fictional version of William S. Burroughs. This is shocking, just google “William S. Burroughs apple” to see how historically rare this event is.
Best Picture got damn near exciting, with the Academy giving thrilling nods to Nickel Boys and I’m Still Here. If we’d been going by the logic that the Producers Guild tends to nominate anything with an award season pulse, that means A Real Pain and September 5 missed out. The main takeaway? This is a wide open race.
While cinematography isn’t mentioned here, this feels like a good place to say it: I think Conclave not receiving a nomination for Best Cinematography is a gross miscarriage of justice
