They’re in! More on this weekend. Enjoy debating the nominees.
Best Picture
No surprises here whatsoever, they just picked the PGA list. Yawn.
Best Actress
Margot Robbie (Barbie) is just the massive snub here, with nominations at SAG and BAFTA and the Critics Choice. Especially weird given how well America Ferrera does in Supporting, but this is just a wildly competitive category I guess.
Best Actor
Pretty much right in line with expectations. Even was pretty sure about Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction) winning the “contested” slot.
Best Supporting Actor
Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things) nabs that fifth spot, tough break for Willem DaFoe (Poor Things) and Charles Melton (May December).
Best Supporting Actress
America Ferrera (Barbie) picks up the fifth spot. Interesting category this year, again it’s not a massive shock that the three BAFTA nominees with a track record got a nod and the three BAFTA nominees without one didn’t. Penélope Cruz (Ferrari) seems to have missed out.
Best Director
Greta Gerwig (Barbie) and Alexander Payne (The Holdovers) are surprise snubs here given DGA. Jonathan Glazer (The Zone of Interest) and Justine Triet (Anatomy of a Fall) getting in there despite only a BAFTA nomination each is neat. Too early to think too hard about why, but we’ve got our annual check-in on the Academy coming up shortly, and the directors branch has added a lot of voters over the past couple years, and much of that new membership has been international.
The overall list is pretty stacked in Oppenheimer's favor. Movie was already a strong contender to win, but now it just looks like theirs to lose. Interesting to see how PGA/DGA/SAG play out.
I think not having either Margot Robbie or Greta Gerwig nominated is going to turn more people away this year. We're already in a new generation who don't watch standard television, but people would've tuned in to that chance at seeing Barbie win big (though it's difficult to see it losing in Production or Costume Design).
This... looks like five easy wins? Is there any real tension or disagreement with the frontrunners in anything but Best Actress?
